Large-Print Crosswords: 9 Tips to Make Puzzles Easier on the Eyes

5 min read · October 20, 2026

Crosswords are a daily pleasure for millions of Americans, but newsprint squares are small and the type is tiny. These habits make the puzzle comfortable again without giving up the challenge.

  1. Enlarge the puzzle on a copier or printer: 150% turns a newspaper grid into a page-size grid.
  2. Ask your library about large-print puzzle books; many keep a shelf of them.
  3. Use a soft pencil (2B) instead of a pen. It is darker on the page and easy to erase.
  4. Sit near a window or use a daylight lamp. Even light causes less squinting than a single bulb.
  5. On a phone or tablet, pinch to zoom, or turn on larger text in the settings.
  6. On a computer, hold Ctrl (Command on a Mac) and press + to make any web page bigger.
  7. Rest your eyes every 20 minutes: look at something across the room for a few seconds.
  8. Keep a magnifier with a built-in light next to your puzzle chair.
  9. When a clue holds you up, look it up with large-print tools such as this site, then keep going.
